Chia Seeds Are A Functional Food

chia seeds an affordable functional food

Definition of Functional Food:  A functional food is considered to be any food or food component that may provide demonstrated physiological benefits or reduce the risk of chronic diseases, above and behond basic nutritional functions.

A research conducted by biomedical scientists suggest that a daily intake of chia seeds may help improve your general health. This report came out of the University of Southern Queensland in Australia in early 2011.

In the report, obese rats given chia seeds for eight weeks improved insulin sensitivity, better usage of glucose for energy, and reduced dangerous fat accumulation especially in the liver and heart.

Lead researcher Professor Lindsay Brown said, 'Chia is the highest plant-based source of omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, and also contains dietary fibre and protein…The accumulation of abdominal fat near vital organs is a major contributor to heart and liver disease, so the potential health benefits of chia seeds to people are significant.' The chia seed was first recognized as a  functional food in the early 2000. It is a whole food, and when eaten raw, contains superior complete protein, is a good source of plant-based Omega-3 essential fatty acids (alpha linolenic acid), antioxidants, minerals, and dietary fiber. It is also reported to contain highly inflammatory properties.
